Innovation is a key focus of SURGiC's work to ensure the translation of scientific knowledge into practical solutions that can improve patient care.

Problem

The primary treatment for cancer is surgery, which aims to remove all the cancer with a safe margin of healthy tissue around it to ensure no cancer cells are left behind.

Inadequate surgical margins can significantly reduce the chance of survival and increase the likelihood of cancer recurrence. Often, patients will also need additional surgery or radiotherapy.

However, it can be difficult to accurately identify a tumor’s boundaries during sugery.

Our Invention

To adress this, we have developed 3Sonic, a new medical device that uses 3D ultrasound technology to improve tumor margin visualization and assessment.

The purpose of 3Sonic is to improve precision during cancer surgery and, ultimately, improve surgical cancer treatment, increasing the number of patients who can be cured with a single operation.

3Sonic constructs a high-resolution 3D ultrasound imaging of surgical specimens within a couple of minutes in the operating room.

This enables surgeons to visualize the resected tumor and immediately evaluate the surgical margins while still in the operating room.

The technology is patented and is currently being clinically tested on oral cancer patients in the operating room. The prototype includes both hardware and specialized software for 3D ultrasound scanning and AI diagnostics.

The development of 3Sonic is funded by Novo Nordisk Foundation, Innovation Fund Denmark and BETA.HEALTH.
